That's VERY do-able ... look out for second hand furniture which would be suitable and sand down, wax tops and paint cream... Simples

Well ... takes a while to do the painting but well worth it!

Our little kitchen makeover is on my blog ... mentioned it several times before .. but I am SO pleased with it. Minimum amount spent on the units.

Here it is AGAIN (sorry peeps)

Just thought ... a while ago at an auction they had some wonderful old Edwardian bookcases with glazed shelved tops ... would look GREAT painted and used to keep crockery etc in and drawers or cupboards under good for tablecloths, dishes etc.

This is what we had for a few years when we moved into this place. We had several sideboards which we painted. The drawback with these is that a splashback does not readily 'go' and you get all kinds of stuff ending up under the units. Our kitchen was far too tiddly for it to be a success like this. If I had more room I would def do it again, but I would add a plinth to the bottoms to make it a bit more uniform and to help with the cleaning, I would prob get them 'fitted' in IYSWIM, so that they fitted in a bit better and you didn't get lots of wasted space. Also I would prob fit a top to the units so you don't get stuff falling down between them. Sadie's idea is perfect I think, several years ago the local antique shed shop was selling old fittings like that, I thought at the time, if only I had seen these first, they would have worked out a similar price too.

We don't have freestanding, but it is cream with wood worktops. But you can't see it cos it's toooooo messy.
But I think the combination gives a really lovely cosy effect. Freestanding would be soooo pretty, but wouldn't work for me cos I'm too lazy about cleaning the floor - I'm waiting on BM3 moving in. Think I keep hinting at this.
