I think whichever way we do things, eventually the smell will go.
I've found with the teabag method I can gauge the strength before it goes in and it can last upto a year.
I let the bags *rest* for a while before using them, then add a bit more if it's not strong enough.
The longest lasting smell I've had has been from the drawer sachets I bought from Dunelms. The smell can last years

So far as the oils on the outside go, I know that real aromatherapy oils don't leave a mark, so they should be OK, so long as they are pure, other oils you would have to check on a piece of fabric that didn't matter.

Oh, but if you used a resin, like Vertiver, Benzoin or some Patchoulie oils, they would leave a brown mark if used directly on the fabric.
